Avalanche Lake in winter. The rugged beauty of this wilderness is unsurpassed. On XC skis or snowshoes, the route from Heart Lake to Marcy Dam, then up through Avalanche Pass to Avalanche and Colden Lakes and back makes a favorite day tour. In good snow conditions, the run down the ski trail from Avalanche Pass to the leantos is great fun.
